Finding Success Where it Lives

I recently read an article in a professional education magazine discussing the rise in student behavior concerns. The piece highlighted that over 30% of teachers report an increase in student behavior challenges, and nearly 60% of educators believe parents need guidance on how children should behave in school.

While the article attempted to address real challenges, one statement stood out: “parents do not understand.”

At Luminova Academy, we see this differently.

As an experienced educator and founder of Luminova Academy, I believe this framing creates an unnecessary divide—an “us vs. them” mentality between schools and families. That divide is one of the biggest barriers to student success. It is not how relationships are built, and it is not how children thrive.

Parents Do Understand—They Just Need to Be Heard

At Luminova Academy, we operate from a foundational belief:
Families are experts on their children.

Parents want to understand. More importantly, they want to be respected as partners.

In my conversations with families, I consistently hear that they feel dismissed or unheard. One family shared how their younger son becomes overwhelmed but can regulate quickly if he connects with his older brother. Despite clearly communicating this strategy, the school chose not to implement it. Instead, the child was only able to see his brother through a security camera—removing the very human connection that could have supported him.

At Luminova, we ask a different question:
“What is the child communicating through this behavior—and who already knows the answer?”

Most often, the family does.

Behavior Is Communication, Not Compliance

Traditional models of education often define behavior through compliance:

  • Did the student follow directions the first time?
  • Did they remain quiet, still, and on task?

But at Luminova Academy, we recognize that behavior is not about control—it is about communication, regulation, and unmet needs.

When a student struggles, we don’t immediately ask, “Why isn’t this child listening?”
We ask,

  • What is happening beneath the surface?
  • What supports does this student need to succeed?
  • How can we partner with the family to respond effectively?

This shift moves us from discipline to understanding.

Eliminating the Divide: The Luminova Approach

At Luminova Academy, we are intentional about breaking down the barriers that have historically separated schools and families.

We do this by:

  • Building relationships before problems arise
Families are engaged as partners from the very beginning—not just during moments of concern.
  • Centering student voice and identity
Many of our students are gifted, twice-exceptional, or non-traditional learners who have not thrived in conventional environments. We honor their differences rather than suppress them.
  • Listening as a professional practice
Listening is not optional—it is essential. Family insight is treated as critical data.
  • Practicing empathy and equity
Every interaction with students and families is grounded in respect, dignity, and cultural responsiveness.
  • Rejecting blame-based thinking
We do not assign fault to families or students. Instead, we take shared responsibility for outcomes.

A New Way Forward

If educators across the country are seeing an increase in student behavior challenges, then we must also be willing to evolve our approach.

The solution is not more control.
It is not more compliance.
And it is certainly not placing blame on families.

The solution is connection.

At Luminova Academy, we are committed to redefining what it means to support students by strengthening the partnership between school and home. When we listen deeply, collaborate authentically, and lead with empathy, we do more than address behavior—we unlock potential.

Because when we truly understand a child, we begin to see what has always been there:

Success—waiting to be found where it lives.
